Mt. Kilimanjaro
Mt. Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa at 5895m, and is located between Moshi and Arusha in the north of Tanzania near the Kenyan border.
Climbing Kilimanjaro is one of the most popular activities for tourists in Tanzania, and thousands of people climb every year. If you are reasonably fit, and well prepared, you have a very good chance of reaching the summit and experiencing what will surely be one of the greatest senses of achievement in your lifetime.
Different Routes to Climb Kilimanjaro
There are several routes on the mountain, which can vary from 5 to 7 days. At mtkili.com, we prefer the Machame route over 7 days, with an extra day spent walking via the Karanga Valley. This route gives you plenty of time to acclimitise to the altitude before attempting the summit.
On the Machame Route, accommodation is in tents carried by your porters and there is no running water at the campsites - although warm water is provided for washing. Nonetheless, the spectacular views on this route more than compensate for any minor discomfort. If you are comfortable with camping, sleeping in the tents only adds to the amazing experience on the mountain.
Alternatively, one of the other popular routes is the Marangu route, which can be completed in only 5 days - making it less expensive than the longer Machame Route. However, with less time to acclimitise, you run a far greater risk of suffering from altitude sickness and failing to summit.
Other routes include Umbwe, Lemosho and Rongai.
